lizard70  > Nature > Saving the Last Great Places -FOR COWS! The Nature Conservancy in Washington
"The mission of The Nature Conservancy is to preserve the plants animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive."

So it is claimed. But when I visited the Dutch Henry Falls Preserve on April 14, 2007, I found a scene that contradicted that mission statement. This preserve is part of the Nature Conservancy's 25,000 acre holdings in Moses Coulee, Douglas County, north-central Washington.

lizard70 > The Nature Conservancy, an international conservation organization of high and usually deserved reputation, prides itself on "saving the Last Great Places". TNC has over 25,000 acres of "shrubsteppe" an endangered landscape of sagebrush and perennial grasses, in the Moses Coulee area of north central Washington state. Unfortunately, TNC grazes much of their "shrubsteppe", and the destruction continues. YOU CAN'T SAVE IT IF YOU GRAZE IT!
lizard70 > Only a few cattle were present on the Dutch Henry Falls Preserve when I visited, but -as we will see- it doesn't take many. Only a few cows can seriously degrade a site.

lizard70 > Welcome to the Dutch Henry Falls Preserve!
lizard70 > The telltale cowpie is on the INSIDE of the "gate".
lizard70 > These passersby agreed to provide scale for this very forgiving gate.
lizard70 > This style gate, which reaches its highest form in England, is usually meant to allow the passage of human beings, and prevent the passage of cattle. But if you make it this wide, even a cow about to have a calf can walk through without a problem!
lizard70 > Let's take the little hike to Dutch Henry Falls... This TNC preserve was the subject of an article in the spring/summer issue of Washington Wildlands, the magazine of The Nature Conservancy Washington. The title of the article was "Partnership with ranchers shows promise at Moses Coulee."
lizard70 > Oh, my! What's this?
